Switch all devices between processors

This is for setups with two redundant KLANG processors. Either the redundancy is configured in KLANG:app, with a primary unit and a backup that holds the same mixes, as described on the Redundancy page. Or two redundant consoles are connected via DiGiCo remote control, with one KLANG processor attached to each console. In both cases, when one processor fails or is back after a repair, all KLANG:apps and KLANG:kontrollers in the house have to change processor. This page shows how to move every KLANG:app and KLANG:kontroller from one processor to the other with a single button press, and back again. Each device keeps the mix it is on: a :kontroller on mix 3 of UNIT1 ends up on mix 3 of UNIT2. This uses the /Ka/control/switchUnit OSC command (KLANG:app / KOS 6.0.8+), saved into two Macro OSC slots and placed on two Action Buttons.

Requires Admin Mode. All steps below are done in one KLANG:app in Admin Mode. Replace UNIT1 / UNIT2 with the names of your processors as shown in CONFIG > CONNECT.

Step 1: Save two Macro OSC slots

Open the dialog via CONFIG > APP > Custom & Macro OSC > Edit & Send, or with the keyboard shortcut:
Mac: ⌃ Control + ⇧ Shift + O
Windows: CTRL + SHIFT + O

Every field of the CUSTOM & MACRO OSC dialog is explained on the Custom & Macro OSC page.

CUSTOM & MACRO OSC dialog: slot 1 named TO UNIT2, target broadcast, port 9111, address /Ka/control/switchUnit, argument UNIT1/UNIT2

Fill in the fields, then press Save Macro. Repeat for the second slot.

The argument is always <from>/<to>: Macro 1 moves everything from UNIT1 to UNIT2, Macro 2 moves everything back.

CONFIG > APP, section Custom & Macro OSC with Macro OSC Slot #1 TO UNIT2 and Slot #2 TO UNIT1 saved

Both slots now show up as green buttons in CONFIG > APP > Custom & Macro OSC.

Step 2: Put the macros on two Action Buttons

In CONFIG > APP, open the Action Buttons section:

  1. Switch Show in Main Menu to ON.
  2. Action Button #1: select Macro OSC Slot #1 | TO UNIT2
  3. Action Button #2: select Macro OSC Slot #2 | TO UNIT1
CONFIG > APP, section Action Buttons with Show in Main Menu ON, Action Button #1 set to Macro OSC Slot #1 | TO UNIT2 and Action Button #2 set to Macro OSC Slot #2 | TO UNIT1

Step 3: Use it

The two buttons now sit at the bottom of the main menu.

Pressing OSC #1 broadcasts the command to the whole network: every KLANG:app and :kontroller currently on UNIT1, including the app you press the button on, switches to UNIT2 and keeps its mix. OSC #2 switches everything back.

Good to know

  • Devices on other processors ignore the command. That is what makes it safe to broadcast, even in a house that runs additional KLANG systems.
  • It also works after a processor failure: a device that already lost its connection still moves if its last processor was <from>.
  • A target that is still booting is remembered: the devices connect as soon as the new processor appears on the network. This even survives an app or :kontroller restart.
  • Processor names are compared case-insensitively; /, > and , all work as the separator. An argument without a separator is rejected on purpose.
  • For a cascade, the plain name (UNIT2) automatically resolves to the right member. If the name is ambiguous (two members serve the same mix), nothing is switched. Repeat the command with the full name, e.g. UNIT1/UNIT2(1).
  • * as the source moves everything regardless of where it is: */UNIT2.
The same command can be sent from a mixing console macro or any OSC tool, e.g. KLANGosc <app-ip> 9111 /Ka/control/switchUnit s "UNIT1/UNIT2".
