VLANs for :kontroller | :vokal | :konductor

Learn more on how to separate Dante and Control with VLANs on second generation KLANG processors.

In short, here are the VLAN ID settings (KOS 5.5 offers a simplified setup) for each KLANG product. See section below on how to set the VLAN ID (VID).

The term Dante VLAN ID used on the KLANG products might be misleading and will no longer appear in KOS 5.5 and higher. This Dante VLAN ID does not correspond to the Dante VLAN ID used on a managed switch!

:vokal

The following settings affect the behaviour of the Dante & Front Network Port:

  1. Switched, with untagged control (default) [DanteVID=1 / ControlVID=1 ]
  2. Switched, with VLAN tagged control [DanteVID=1 / ControlVID=2-4096]
  3. Dante separate control & Front Control ONLY [DanteVID=0 / ControlVID=1]

:konductor

The following settings affect the behaviour of LINK & Front Network Port:

  1. Switched, with untagged control (default) [DanteVID=1 / ControlVID=1]
  2. Switched, with VLAN tagged control [DanteVID=1 / ControlVID=2-4096]
To keep Dante and Control separate on :konductor, simply do not connect DMI-Dante and :konductor Control/LINK ports to the same VLAN on your switch.

:kontroller

The following settings affect the behaviour of the Dante/CONTROL Network Port:

  1. Switched, with untagged control (default) [DanteVID=1 / ControlVID=1]
  2. Switched, with VLAN tagged control [DanteVID=1 / ControlVID=2-4096]

Default Network Setup

Switched Dante and Control

This is the default network setup. All KLANG products’ factory settings are meant for this setup which is suitable for smaller Dante networks or for isolated :kontroller networks.

:vokal

Make sure to use the factory setting: Switched, with untagged control (default) [DanteVID=1 / ControlVID=1 ].

Connect Dante port to network switch.

Do NOT connect Control port to the same switch as well, as this will create a network loop.

Connect all :kontrollers to network switch.

A :kontroller can also be connected to FRONT port.

:konductor

Make sure to use the factory setting: Switched, with untagged control (default) [DanteVID=1 / ControlVID=1]
Connect LINK port to network switch.

Do NOT connect Control port to the same switch as well, as this would create a network loop.

Connect DMI-Dante to network switch.

Connect all :kontrollers to network switch.

A :kontroller can also be connected to the FRONT port.

:kontroller

Make sure to use the factory setting: Switched, with untagged control (default) [DanteVID=1 / ControlVID=1]

Advanced Network Setup

Separate Dante and Control

This advanced setup keeps Dante and Control completely separate.

A managed network switch is recommended for this setup. Choose a Control VLAN ID (Control VID, 100 is used in this guide), which will be used in the following steps and also needs to be used as the VLAN ID on the ports of the managed network switch.

Managed Switch

Configure all ports that connect to :kontrollers or :vokal on the managed switch as follows:
untagged Dante VLAN ID (We recommend to use the default switch VLAN here. Some switches require the PVID to be set separately, make sure to use the Dante VLAN ID used in the managed switch as the PVID for :kontroller and :vokal ports)
tagged Control VLAN ID.

:vokal

Connect computer via Control port to :vokal. KLANG:app > CONFIG > INFO > Set Menu > Expert Network Settings >
Switched, with VLAN tagged control [DanteVID=1 / ControlVID=2–4096]

Connect Dante port to switch (Dante untagged, tagged Control with Control VID e.g. 100)

Do NOT connect Control port to the same switch as well, as this will create a network loop.
Alternatively, use the setting Dante separate control & Front Control ONLY [DanteVID=0 / ControlVID=1] for :vokal and connect :vokal ports as follows:
Control port to managed switch port with untagged Control VID (If required, set PVID on managed switch to Control VID)
Dante port to managed switch port with untagged Dante VID (If required, set PVID on managed switch to Dante VID)

:konductor

Configure Control VLAN ID via :konductor front display.

Alternatively, connect computer via Control port to :konductor. KLANG:app > CONFIG > INFO > Set Menu > Expert Network Settings >
Switched, with VLAN tagged control [DanteVID=1 / ControlVID=2–4096]

Connect LINK port to network switch. This will carry untagged Dante and tagged Control.

Connect DMI-Dante primary to network switch.

:kontroller

Configure Control VLAN ID via :kontroller CONFIG menu to: Switched, with VLAN tagged control [DanteVID=1 / ControlVID=2-4096]

Connect :kontroller to switch. This port will carry untagged Dante and tagged Control traffic.

Expert Network Settings Menu

For :kontroller, :vokal and :konductor, an Expert Network Settings menu to configure VLAN IDs is offered via KLANG:app > CONFIG > INFO > Set > Expert Network Settings

Moving forward: KOS 5.5 will no longer support Dante VLAN IDs higher than 1, i.e. Dante traffic can no longer be tagged. The reason is a new :kontroller revision using Audinate’s Dante IPcore which does not support VLANs.

For existing setups, we recommend to use the Control VLAN ID instead.
