VLANs for :kontroller | :vokal | :konductor

Learn more on how to separate Dante and Control with VLANs on second generation KLANG processors.

Make sure to run KOS 5.5 or higher, since the VLAN configuration has undergone a major change and has been streamlined and simplied.

:vokal

The following settings affect the behaviour of the Dante & Front Network Port:

  1. Switched, with untagged control (default) [Dante and Control untagged]
  2. Switched, with VLAN tagged control [Control tagged with VID=2-4096]
  3. Dante separate control & Front Control ONLY

:konductor

The following settings affect the behaviour of LINK & Front Network Port:

  1. Switched, with untagged control (default)
  2. Switched, with VLAN tagged control [Control tagged with VID=2-4096]
To keep Dante and Control separate on :konductor, simply do not connect DMI-Dante and :konductor Control/LINK ports to the same VLAN on your switch.

:kontroller

The following settings affect the behaviour of the Dante/CONTROL Network Port:

  1. Switched, with untagged control (default): Dante and Control is untagged.
  2. Switched, with VLAN tagged control [Dante untagged / Control tagged with VID=2-4096]

Default Network Setup

Switched Dante and Control

This is the default network setup. All KLANG products’ factory settings are meant for this setup which is suitable for smaller Dante networks or for isolated :kontroller networks.

:vokal

  1. Make sure to use the factory setting: Switched, with untagged control (default).
  2. Connect Dante port to network switch.
  3. Connect all :kontrollers to network switch.
  4. A :kontroller can also be connected to :vokal’s FRONT port.
Do NOT connect :vokal Control port to the same switch as well, as this will create a network loop.

:konductor

  1. Make sure to use the factory setting: Switched, with untagged control (default)
  2. Connect LINK port to network switch.
  3. Connect DMI-Dante to network switch
  4. Connect all :kontrollers to network switch.
  5. A :kontroller can also be connected to the FRONT port.
Do NOT connect Control port to the same switch as well, as this would create a network loop.

:kontroller

Make sure to use the factory setting: Switched, with untagged control (default)

Advanced Network Setup

Separate Dante and Control

This advanced setup keeps Dante and Control completely separate.

A managed network switch is recommended for this setup. Choose a Control VLAN ID (ControlVID = 100 is used in this guide as an example), which will be used in the following steps and also needs to be used as the VLAN ID on the ports of the managed network switch.

Managed Switch

Configure all ports that connect to :kontrollers or :vokal on the managed switch as follows:
untagged Dante VLAN ID (We recommend to use the default switch VLAN here. Some switches require the PVID to be set separately, make sure to use the Dante VLAN ID used in the managed switch as the PVID for :kontroller and :vokal ports)
tagged Control VLAN ID.

:vokal

Connect computer via Control port to :vokal. KLANG:app > CONFIG > INFO > Set Menu > Expert Network Settings >
Switched, with VLAN tagged control [ControlVID=2–4096]

Connect Dante port to switch (Dante untagged, tagged Control with Control VID e.g. 100)

Do NOT connect Control port to the same switch as well, as this will create a network loop.
Alternatively, use the setting Dante separate control & Front Control ONLY for :vokal and connect :vokal ports as follows:
Control port to managed switch port with untagged Control VID (If required, set PVID on managed switch to Control VID)
Dante port to managed switch port with untagged Dante VID (If required, set PVID on managed switch to Dante VID)

:konductor

  1. Configure Control VLAN ID via :konductor front display.
  2. Alternatively, connect computer via Control port to :konductor. KLANG:app > CONFIG > INFO > Set Menu > Expert Network Settings >
Switched, with VLAN tagged control [ControlVID=2–4096]
  3. Connect LINK port to network switch. This will carry untagged Dante and tagged Control with VID e.g. 100.
  4. Connect DMI-Dante primary to network switch.

:kontroller

  1. Configure Control VLAN ID via :kontroller CONFIG menu to: Switched, with VLAN tagged control [ControlVID=2-4096]
  2. Connect :kontroller to switch. This port will carry untagged Dante and tagged Control traffic.

Guide for managed switch configuration

Two VLANs need to be configured on the managed network switch

  • Dante, e.g. VID 2 (This VID is only used in the managed switch internally and not used on any KLANG product)
  • KLANG control, e.g. VID 100

There are three different port types that need to be configured on the switch

  • Dante ONLY: untagged Dante VLAN e.g. 2. Used to connect any other Dante device.
  • KLANG Control ONLY: untagged Control VLAN e.g. 100. Used to connect KLANG:app devices also via Wireless Access Point or DiGiCo Console for Console Integration
  • KLANG trunk: Untagged Dante VLAN e.g. 2 and tagged KLANG Control VLAN e.g. 100. Used to connect to :vokal Dante Port, :konductor LINK Port and :kontroller (All with configured KLANG Control VID e.g. 2)
Note that the Dante VID is only used in the managed switch internally and will not be visible to the outside. This VID is not used on a KLANG device as Dante is always untagged.
